Pittsburg Republican Jake LaTurner defeated incumbent Fort Scott Republican in the August primary elections, and on Tuesday he defeated Pittsburg Democratic challenger Gene Garman by a vote count — minus provisional ballots — of 7,597 to 6,382, or 54 to 46 percent.
LaTurner, who will be entering his first term in office, said he was excited to get busy in the Statehouse in Topeka.
“I’m so thankful for the people that helped volunteer countless hours going door to door on my behalf,” LaTurner said. “I’m truly humbled that the people of southeast Kansas entrusted me with this position, and I’m going to try my best to not let them down.”
Garman could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.
LaTurner said he thinks the hard work he and his volunteers put in contributed to his win.
“I think it was the time we put in getting our message out, and I think that message at the end of the day is what carried us through,” LaTurner said. “We talked about competition with neighboring states and bringing jobs back to Kansas. We talked about schools and infrastructure. Getting that message out was key and I think that that’s why we were able to be successful.”
Garman, who did not spend more than $500 on his campaign, did not accept campaign donations or take out political ads, spent most of his campaign going door-to-door.
