The Jock’s Nitch Athletics and the CP Communications Reds gave the fans at Ted Carnino Field a little bit of everything during their game Wednesday night.
The Athletics and the Reds combined for 14 runs in the fifth and sixth innings with Jock’s Nitch taking advantage of home field in dramatic fashion with a walk-off double by Trey Strawder to claim a 11-10 win.
Down 10-9 entering its final turn at-bat, Jock’s Nitch leadoff man Matthew “Frog” Smith started the sixth in style. Facing a new pitcher in Brooks Badart, Smith found a pitch to his liking and drove it to deep center. Despite a little friendly hindrance by CP Communications first baseman Grant Roelfs as Smith advanced toward second, nothing could stop Smith from motoring around the bases and emphatically waved home by his third base coach, Smith made it home for an inside-the-park HR and a 10-all score.
With one down, Matt Cicero put the winning run on base with a single. Cicero advanced to second on a wild pitch and momentarily thought about third but decided against it on second thought. A good move, since Cicero scored the game-winning run on the Strawder smash.
The Big Bang Rockfest in April rocked Pittsburg’s annual fireworks budget to the tune of $10,600, more than doubling the total raised by the event the year before. However, other donations have been slower to arrive, and with the fireworks order deadline quickly approaching this year’s show is looking smaller than usual.

Power walking and running were both on display during the Junior League game Tuesday between Vietti Auto Body and Watco at the PSU Softball Complex. The game had the approval of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Governor’s Council on Fitness.
Vietti and Watco combined for 21 walks, three hit batters and several wild pitches as Vietti defeated Watco 15-7 in a wild, windy and wacky contest lasting only three innings.
Vietti scored five runs in all three innings, collecting four hits and 13 of the 21 walks against Watco pitchers Maddie Darrow and Malayna Brown.
A year ago, space was at a premium for the Arma City Library.
“We were out of space for books,” said library director Brenda Banks. “It was just so small.”
She said only one person could be behind the circulation desk at a time and the overall arrangement presented a challenge.
