A citywide crime spree that included two robberies and a carjacking ended when four men in the stolen car crashed into an apartment building and then ran early Wednesday morning.

Police with their K-9 quickly caught up to them, said Lt. Greg Boudreaux.

K-9 officer, Patrolman Ryan Davis, was hurt, but his injuries were not described as life-threatening, Boudreaux said.

The incident started around 2 a.m. Wednesday when the men robbed a couple at gunpoint in the 1500 block of Fifth Street NE, he said. The group went on to steal a car from a woman and her passenger in the 900 block of Fulton Road NW. Then they robbed a man walking at Fifth Street and Union Avenue SW, the lieutenant said.

When police saw the car and tried to pull it over, the driver sped away stopping only when it crashed into an apartment building. Information was not available as to whether anyone at the apartment building was hurt.

Davis and his police K-9, Armin, caught up to Richard A. Burghy, 18, who lives in Lot 31 at 5029 Valley Dr. SW in Bethlehem Township. Burghy was arrested around 3 a.m. in the 1600 block of Allen Avenue SE, Stark County Jail records said.

Jail records said Burghy assaulted the man on Fifth Street while someone else held the victim at gunpoint and robbed him of unidentified personal items. The records said Burghy also assisted in the robbery of the woman and her car.

Burghy was arrested on charges of no operator’s license, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, no safety belt, felony failure to comply with police, three counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of complicity to aggravated robbery. He was also arrested on a child delinquency warrant.

Also arrested were the following men:

• William L. Bissett, 23, who lives with Burghy;

• Glenn E. Parks Jr., 23, of 721 Union Ave. SW;

• and Daniel R. Slates, 27, of 1309 Fulton Rd. NW, Apt. 3.

Bissett and Parks were each charged with four counts of aggravated robbery and one count of complicity to aggravated robbery. Slates was charged with three counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of complicity to aggravated robbery.

Slates is currently on parole for receiving stolen property in Crawford County, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Web site at www.drc.ohio.gov. Stark County Court records show he went to prison in 2002 for felony failure to comply with police and two counts of vehicular assault.

Bissett went to prison in 2006 for felony failure to stop after an accident and driving under suspension, and Parks served time in prison in 2006 for felonious assault, court records show.

All four men remained in jail Thursday. Bond was set at $50,000 each for Bissett and Slates. Parks and Burghy were held without bond.
