GANGSTER SQUAD

The cure for Sean Penn’s ill-advised turn as a Robert Smith-like rocker turned Nazi hunter in “This Must be the Place” could well be this stylish gangster picture in which he plays famed Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen. Vowing to bring down the Jewish capo’s vast web of illegal activities are a couple of determined cops played by Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin. The director is Ruben Fleischer, best known for his quirky cult hit “Zombieland,” starring Emma Stone, who also plays a key role here. The film, which was originally scheduled for a September 2012 release, was pulled and sent back for extensive rejiggering after July’s shooting spree inside an Aurora, Colo., cineplex that too closely mirrored a scene in the movie.

A HAUNTED HOUSE

Marlon Wayans co-wrote and stars in this send-up of the inexplicably popular “Paranormal Activity” films. In it, he and Essence Atkins play a young couple whose new dream house turns out to be a nightmare. Nick Swardson and Cedric the Entertainer co-star.
