  • Alice Joan (Owens) Pursley, age 86, formerly of Pittsburg, KS, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Sunrise of Cinco Ranch Assisted Living in Katy, TX.
    Mrs. Pursley was born August 6, 1926 in Decatur, IN to Arbie E. and Emma G. (Hebble) Owens.  She moved to Pittsburg, KS as a young bride and resided there for 60 years.  She recently moved to Katy, TX to be near her son and his family.
    Alice received her Bachelor’s of Education from Ball State University and a Masters from Pittsburg State University.
    She married Robert (Bob) Joe Pursley on June 5, 1949.  She and Bob enjoyed over 64 years of marriage together, raising two sons.
    Alice worked for Frontenac School District as an art and Spanish teacher and Pittsburg State University in the Continuing Education Department.  Alice enjoyed china painting, oil painting, knitting, crocheting, sewing, crafts and traveling around the world.
    Alice was a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years, Daughters of the Nile, Kansas Authors Club, BPWA and AAUW.  As secretary of the new by-laws of AAUW, Alice received a grant named in her honor for all of her hard work.  She was active in her children’s lives participating in Cub and Boy Scouts.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pittsburg, KS.  
    Survivors include her husband, Bob of Katy, TX and a son, Kevin Pursley (Sharon) of Katy, TX; a granddaughter, Shannon Pursley of Houston, TX; a grandson, Caleb Pursley of Las Vegas, NV; a cousin, Jackie  Reynolds (Bill) of Indianapolis, IN; a niece, Janet  Boctor (Saad) of Charlottesville, VA; a nephew, Gordon Mendenhall (Susan) of Indianapolis, IN; three great nieces and two great nephews; and several great-great nieces and great-great nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Michael R. Pursley, a brother, Robert L. Owens; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Evelyn (Pursley) Mendenhall; a great-great nephew, Luke Butler; and other relatives.
    The family suggests memorials to the Campus Christians Ministry, 213 East Williams Street, Pittsburg, KS 66762 or to a charity of your choice.
