  • Girard cross-country teams finish first at home meet

  • Girard cross-country team members broke school records and won team championships Sept. 12 during the Girard Cross-Country Meet at the Crawford Country Fairgrounds.
    The meet included five races: JV girls, JV boys, middle school, varsity girls and varsity boys.
    JV girls, JV boys and middle school ran 2-mile races while varsity girls ran a 4K and varsity boys ran a 5k.
    The girls’ varsity team took first overall.
    Medalists from GHS included Cailie Logue, 1st; Christian Provence, 3rd; Layne Karhoff, 14th; Jayden Rusher, 17th; Cassidy Thomason, 22nd; and Erin Kruse, 23rd.
    Both Logue and Provence ran fast enough to put them on the top five all-time 4K list with times of 14:27 and 15:47, respectively.
    The boys’ varsity team also took first.
    GHS medalists included Nathan Hughes, 1st; Drew Zimmerman, 2nd; Aaron Pyle, 3rd; Jon Zimmerman, 5th; Austin Lowe, 13th; Tanim Dillon, 17th; and Russell Frisbee, 23rd.
    JV girls’ medalists from Girard included Jennifer Sooter, 5th; Morgan Michael, 6th; Jolene Tennyson, 7th; and Caylee Egbert, 8th.
    Caleb Thurman medaled 5th on the JV boys’ side.
    Teams from Baxter Springs, Caney Valley, Columbus, Humbolt, Independence, Parsons, St. Paul, Southeast and Yates Centeralso participated in the event.
