  • The aggressive defense of the St. Mary's Colgan Panthers led to a short field and a road victory over Anderson County 48-0. In Colgan's first road game of the season, head football coach Chuck Smith was looking forward to playing the Bulldogs to see where his team was at early in this season, and the Panthers answered his call by forcing six turnovers and holding the Bulldogs to a toal of 82 yards and all of those yards came on the ground. The defense held Bulldog quarterback Zack Hilliard to zero passing yards, and 64 yards on the ground. The highlight for the Colgan defense came early in the second quarter when Colton Gilbert picked off one of Hillard's passes and took it all the way for a 50-yard TD at the 9:06 mark in the second quarter. On the offensive side of the ball, senior quarterback Luke Marquardt went 4-of-5 with 87 yards and a passing touchdown; Marquardt added a rushing TD. Christian Cedeno had eight carries for 53 yards and two scores, while Drew Dawson had 10 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown. The Panther offense had 322 yards of offense with 222 yards coming from its ground attack. The Colgan defense started strong by forcing Hillard to throw an interception on his first pass attempt. After a few Colgan plays, Dawson punched a 3-yard touchdown run at the 7:03 mark of the first quarter. After Colgan held Anderson County to a three and out, Colgan was on the move again and Marquardt capped an eight play drive by running a 20-yard touchdown with 3:18 left in the first quarter. Ian Duncan recovered a Anderson County fumble on the Bulldog 34 yard-line, then Marquardt found Aaron Twarog for a 39-yard TD pass to extend the Colgan lead to 20-0 with 2:56 left in the first. The second quarter started with a bang for Colgan, which scored in four plays into the quarter with a 25-yard run by Cedeno. Colgan scored two more touchdowns in the third, a Cedeno 5-yard run and a Joe Battitori 2-yard run, forcing a running clock for the entire fourth quarter. Colgan will look to improve to 4-0 on the season against the Frontenac Raiders next Friday night.
