ST. CHARLES, Mo. — It's been a tale of two teams for the Pittsburg State Gorillas this season.
The Gorillas own a 10-4 record in the friendly confines of Al Ortolani Field, 3-12 away from Ortolani Field and the pattern continued Saturday afternoon with Lindenwood sweeping Pitt State 6-5 and 4-2 at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
Pitt State fell behind in both games, came back to tie up the score and then give up the lead.
In Game 1, Lindenwood took a 3-0 lead in the second inning behind a Zach Kurzejeski fielder's choice bunt and Jerry Roam two-run double.
The Gorillas scored their first run in the third with a Derek Hackney triple plating Andrew Kreiling.
In the bottom half of the third, the Lions went up 5-1 on a Kyle Leslie two-run double.
Pitt State scored two in the fourth and two in the fifth — Ian Robinson cracked a two-run double in the fourth and Brad Foss and Cody Ball picked up back-to-back RBI on a single (Foss) and a double (Ball).
Lindenwood won its second consecutive game against Pitt State in walk-off fashion, this one in the seventh against, for the second consecutive game, Pitt State ace reliever Ryan McKay.
Roam hit into a 6-3 groundout, scoring pinch-runner Kyle Kruger for the win.
In Game 2, Lindenwood took a 2-0 lead after two with a Marshall Vallandingham RBI single in the first and a Kurzejeski RBI single in the second.
The Gorillas scored their only two runs in the third, with a Foss fielder's choice RBI and Hackney scoring on an error by Lindenwood second baseman Kurzejeski on the same play.
Lindenwood closed out the scoring in the fifth with two runs, a sacrifice fly by Valladingham and a RBI single by Ryan Light.
This was the first game of the series Lindenwood did not win in walk-off fashion.
Pitt State — 13-16 overall, 10-13 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association — looks to end a three-game losing streak, salvage one game from the four-game series and halt an eight-game road game losing streak in the series finale 1 p.m. Sunday from the Lou Brock Sports
Lindenwood improved to 13-17, 10-9 MIAA and 9-3 at home.
