Ed. Note: U.S. Reps. Todd Tiahrt, R-Kan. and Jerry Moran, R-Kan. have been invited to submit a weekly blog entry. The following is Tiahrt's entry for this week:
This week President Obama and Nancy Pelosi twisted enough arms and brokered enough sweetheart deals that they were able to strong-arm their nationalized healthcare bill into law. But the fight is not over. It is as important as ever that Kansans stay engaged in this important battle. We must remain committed to principles of freedom and fight for them every chance we have.
Our next step is to press for a full repeal of this mass intrusion of unconstitutional government into our daily lives and replace it with policies that will actually reduce the cost of healthcare. President Obama and Speaker Pelosi have created a mess—and now our focus is on cleaning it up and working to restore the freedoms they took from us.
During floor debate on the healthcare bill, I was honored to represent my Kansas constituents on the House floor and challenge Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats. Then on Monday morning, just hours after the Sunday night vote, I joined with my Republican colleagues Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Steve King (R-Iowa) and Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) in introducing legislation to repeal the entire healthcare law crafted by the Obama administration and Washington special interest groups.
This week I also sent a letter to congressional leaders proposing that House-Senate strategy discussions begin immediately to begin the process of defunding every federal mandate contained in President Obama’s new healthcare law. As Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee where all funding requests for healthcare spending must pass through, I will be working diligently to defund the law and restore the lost freedoms stolen from the American People. Click here to read the letter I sent to House and Senate leaders.
We will fight this in committee and on the floor and through the courts. We must not succumb to the will of Washington Democrats who care more about advancing their liberal agenda than heeding the will of the American people. If we have the courage to not give up, we will eventually win and pass true healthcare reforms based on conservative, market-driven principles.
