As the primary election season winds down to its waning weeks, candidates started to celebrate endorsements on Monday.

One big winner is Jerry Moran.

The 1st District Representative is in a heated primary challenge with fellow Congressman Todd Tiahrt for the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sam Brownback.

On Monday, Moran picked up the newspaper endorsements of the Kansas City Star and the Hutchinson News.

The Star editorial said that Moran had "shown flashes of courage" during his time in the U.S. House. citing his opposition to Medicare Part D while Tiahrt's latest blasting of Moran over immigration has done "little to address the complex problems."

The Hutchinson News Editorial Board said that Moran would be a "hard-working, Kansas-centered U.S. Senator if elected."

Another winner from the weekend is Democrat Charles Schollenberger. The former newspaper publisher from Kansas City also earned the endorsement of both newspapers.

In the 2nd District U.S. House race, incumbent Republican Lynn Jenkins earned the endorsement of the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund.

Charles Cunningham, Director of Federal Affairs for the NRA PVF, stated that Congresswoman Jenkins has "demonstrated a proven and consistent commitment to our Second Amendment Rights," earning an "A" rating with the organization.

“I am honored to have the NRA's endorsement. My 100% Congressional voting record with the NRA shows my dedication to fight for our constitutional right to keep and bear arms," Jenkins said. "As President Obama and Speaker Pelosi continue to attack the rights of  gun owners, I will stand with the constitution and the rights it guarantees."
