Semi closes U.S. Highway 69 bypass Tuesday morning

An errant tractor-trailor forced law enforcement officials to block off the U.S. Highway 69 bypass for several hours Tuesday morning after the semi’s trailer slipped off the road near the intersection of the highway and Atkinson Ave. shortly after 8 a.m.

The 19-axle rig was carrying a 350,000 pound industrial boiler on an oversized 225-foot trailer en route to Mississippi. The rig did not flip over and there were no injuries.

Earthquake effects reach Pittsburg

The aftershock of an earthquake near Oklahoma City Saturday night that measured 5.2 on the Richter scale rippled through Pittsburg at about 11 p.m. According to the United States Geological Survey’s website, the quake occurred at 10:53 p.m. about 21 miles north and east of Shawnee, Okla., at a depth of 3.1 miles below the surface. The wave was felt and reported to The Morning Sun by Pittsburg residents about 10 minutes later. It was also reported by meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Springfield, Mo.
 

Community National Bank in Frontenac robbed

An armed man robbed Community National Bank in Frontenac Monday morning and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, Frontenac Police officials said.

Frontenac Police Chief Randy Flora said the suspect, an African American male who is about six feet tall and heavily-built, entered the bank at 4097 Parkview Drive at about 10:45 a.m. Monday morning. He waited in a lobby chair for a customer to leave before approaching a teller with a note demanding money and brandishing a firearm.

Frontenac baseball beats top-seeded Council Grove

Using a two-out, two-run double from Austin Beckley in the fourth inning, the Frontenac Raider baseball team upended top-seeded Council Grove, 3-1 Friday afternoon in the first round of the Class 3A state baseball tournament in Manhattan.

Via Christi takes in Joplin victims

Pittsburg’s Via Christi Hospital as of 1 a.m. Monday has received 46 patients with injuries related to the tornado that flattened much of Joplin, Mo., Sunday evening.

The tornado put St. John’s Hospital in Joplin completely out of commission, which meant victims were sent to Joplin’s Freeman Health System and other hospitals in nearby communities. In two southeast Kansas hospitals, it meant taking on many new patients.

Tornadoes ripped through parts of the Midwest on Sunday killing at least one person in Minneapolis and an unknown number of others in a Missouri town where a hospital was damaged.

Members of the Crawford County EMS have been asked to assist with what has been called "extensive damage" to the southern section of Joplin, Mo. on Sunday evening.

According to reports in Joplin, Mo., the city has been heavily affected by a tornado that swept through the area around 6 p.m.

Girard's Class of 2011 graduates 89

Girard High School graduated its Class of 2011, 89 strong, Sunday afternoon at Ted R. Taylor Gymnasium, a class which commencement speaker Kaleb Belcher called "unique."

"Girard's graduating class of 2011 is only the latest in a long line of talented classes," commencement speaker Darcy Boultinghouse said. "We have musicians, athletes, intellectuals, comedians and possibly the next Justin Bieber among us. Our class has the potential to go out into the world and be whatever we want to be."

Fire consumes two downtown Pittsburg buildings
