In observance of Flag Day 2012, I’m resurrecting the following post from a year ago this month:
The thing I like best about the Pledge of Allegiance is how the self-appointed guardians of true patriotism can work themselves into a major snit at the slightest departure from orthodoxy in the recitation of this paean to the American flag.
The latest example of such umbrage ARISES from NBC’s exclusion of the words “under God” from a reading of the Pledge in a video that accompanied the beginning of the network’s coverage of the U.S. Open Golf Championship.
Oh, the disgrace of it all!
