Q: I was injured at work and I need a lawyer to help me.  I looked on the internet and found all different types of lawyers.  Why are there so many types and can a lawyer do two different types of law?  Can an injury lawyer help me with a criminal case?

A: There are many different types of lawyers and the truth is most lawyers now days specialize in a certain practice area.  The law is a vast and expansive amount of knowledge and many lawyers will focus on one particular area.  Some common examples are a criminal defense lawyer might only help people accused of crimes, a personal injury lawyer might only help injured victims, a family lawyer might only do divorces and child custody work, and a traffic lawyer might only help people with speeding tickets.  The list goes on and on.  When you are licensed to practice law you can legally do any of these things, some lawyers just choose to focus on being the best at one.  That does not mean that a particular lawyer can't do several of these and be very good at them, it just means that some choose only to do one.  There are many valid reasons for a lawyer to do many different types of law.  If the lawyer is in a small town it will often be necessary as there simply isn't enough lawyers to help everyone and simply practice one area of law.  Some choose to practice in multiple fields for variety.  The simple fact of the matter is you need to be comfortable with your lawyer and his/her knowledge when you hire them.  If you’re comfortable and the lawyer has a good reputation then that is really all you can ask for.
