After two rounds of canvassing and a recount, Michael Gayoso Jr. has won the county attorney race by 14 votes over incumbent John Gutierrez.

At canvassing in Girard on Wednesday, 31 ballots were made available, most from military advance ballots. Going into the process, Gayoso had a 14-vote lead over Gutierrez out of more than 15,000 votes cast.

Of those 31 ballots, three did not have a vote on the county attorney race. Gayoso and Gutierrez exactly split the remaining 28 votes, leaving Gutierrez 14 votes short.

At this point, the election is final, but Gutierrez may ask for a recount at his own expense. If the recount were to overturn the current results, Gutierrez would be refunded for the cost.
