Pittsburg State University basketball fans not only met the Pitt State basketball teams and gained their autographs on Tuesday night, but also learned some informational tidbits about select players during a brief trivia session and watched both teams showcase their skills via a couple of their daily practice drills inside John Lance Arena.
Fans may remember that junior forward JaVon McGee played high school basketball on the same team as former University of Colorado sensation and 2011 NBA Draft first round selection Alec Burks, at Grandview High School. However, it was revealed on Tuesday night that McGee counts chocolate-covered bacon as his favorite food and PSU women’s basketball coach Lane Lord calls McGee “an energy giver.”
“If you’re an energy giver, you give energy to your teammates,” Lord said. “He’s an energy giver. I love watching him practice.”
Additionally, on the men’s team, teammates voted Marky Nolen the craziest player on the team, Sam Pugh was born with six fingers on his left hand, Arjok Guguai speaks three different languages, Andra Bailey wants to be like Mike and Maurte Harrison lists “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” as his favorite book. Eric Ray has nine siblings and chose Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and his grandmother as his three ultimate dinner guests.
On the women’s team, five players voted Pitt State football coming from behind and defeating then No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri at Arrowhead this year as the best sporting event, Sara Molz competed in gymnastics for 10 years, Kristina Willis is most like G.I. Jane, Lizzy Jeronimus named Hope Solo as her favorite sports figure, Cathy Brugman has never flown on a plane and Lauren Brown named “To Kill A Mockingbird” as her favorite book.
The women ran the scramble drill and the 5-man weave, both drills emphasizing 3-on-2 situations. Lord said it’s his goal for his players to get 3-on-2s every possession.
“We want to break down their defense to where we have three of our players against two of theirs,” Lord said.
Men’s basketball head coach Kevin Muff said Pitt State will focus on running the floor and being a fan-friendly entertainment this season.
“We want to be exciting to watch play,” Muff said. “You’re going to see it turned up a notch this year.
“You make us who we are. We’re about you. This is your program as much as it is ours.”
