Pittsburg soccer climbed one game above .500 with a 3-0 home win Thursday over Coffeyville.

Danilo Pinheiro gave Pittsburg (6-5 overall) the only goal it needed during the first half, Emmanuel Gonzales added two insurance goals and Coffeyville found Pittsburg senior goalkeeper Gershom Avalos to be a stone wall.

“We did a good job,” Pittsburg head coach Wraine Meadows said. “We played physical, played aggressive. We knew coming in they were a physical team and we knew we’d have to try to give back it to them as much as they would give it to us. I was pleased with the effort.”

Pittsburg managed 21 shots on goal, 12 in the first half and nine in the second half. Freshman forward Kyle Steinmiller kicked in what would have been the first goal but it was waived off on an offside; a few minutes later, freshman Jose Ayala set up Pinheiro for the lone goal of the first half. Both teams worked their way through a northerly wind.
“It did (affect us) a little bit,” Meadows said. “It put kind of a funky spin on the ball. Luckily, it didn’t hurt us too bad. We were still able to have some good passes and good ball movement.”

Pittsburg started sophomore Ricky Sanchez, freshman Jose Ayala, sophomore Keaton Wilber, freshman Sullivan Lauderdale and freshman Kyle Steinmiller with freshman Lukas McConnell and sophomore Emmanuel Gonzales seeing plenty of varsity field time.

“Fantastic. Fantastic,” Meadows said. “We’ve got a lot of freshmen and sophomore players and they’re all doing really good. They’re progressing a lot further than I expected.”

Making waves has been Pinheiro, a junior exchange student from Brazil. He scored three goals against College Heights, three against Thomas Jefferson, four against Columbus and four earlier in the season against Coffeyville. Meadows estimates Pinheiro to have 16 or 17 goals on the season — 27 goals are the PHS school record.
“He’s been fantastic,” Meadows said. “There’s a cultural difference to our style of play versus what he was used to so it’s been a little challenge for him adjusting. He’s starting to develop into a complete player. The language barrier we’re getting through now. He’s leading the team in goals and we’re getting some more passing out of him now. It’s coming along really good.”

Pinheiro assisted on a pair of goals in the second half by Gonzales, who scored three goals against Coffeyville back in the third match of the season.

“He got two today,” Meadows said. “He’s probably our most well-rounded player, as far as his skillset.”

Avalos, one of a handful of seniors on the Pittsburg team (along with Oswaldo Villela, Ian Diver, Kaleb Konek and Tri Palmer), finished with nine saves.

Pittsburg made it a clean sweep with a 5-3 win in the JV contest. Patrick Ryan netted a hat trick with three goals, and Ayala and Diego Luna each picked up single goals.
