By way of a big 14-10 win Saturday over the Butler Grizzlies, the Fort Scott Community College football team jumped from No. 5 to No. 2 in this weeks’ JCGridiron.com national football poll.
With the loss, the Grizzlies fell eight spots to No. 15 in the poll.
Navarro College (Texas) took over the number one spot after their 23-20 victory over No. 3 ranked Blinn College (Texas). Navarro was previously ranked No. 4 by the publication.
Blinn went from being the No. 3 team to the No. 8 spot after the loss.
The previous top three teams lost this past weekend to cause a major shake-up in the rankings.
Previous No. 1 El Camino (Calif.) lost to Mt. San Antonio College (Calif.) 42-26 to fall to No. 5 in this week’s rankings. City of San Francisco College (Calif.) lost to San Mateo (Calif.) College to go from number two to the No. 11 spot.
Fort Scott used a 15-play 93-yard drive that consumed over 7 minutes late in the fourth quarter to take the lead and held on for the last 1 minute, 37 seconds to take the victory and the league championship.
This was the first Jayhawk Conference championship for the ‘Hounds since 1974 and the first victory over Butler in the last 22 tries.
Butler had won the last 8 league championships and 10 out of the last 11.
Fort Scott now looks at going into the Region 6 play-offs with home field advantage after their win on Saturday.
The top-seeded Greyhounds (9-0) play No. 4-seeded Hutchinson Community College (6-3) at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Frary Field.
On the other side of the bracket will pit the No. 2 seed Butler Grizzlies (7-2) against No. 3 Coffeyville Red Ravens (6-3).
