The Kansas Legislature's budget committee chairmen believe pressure is building for furloughs in state government.

Aides to Gov. Mark Parkinson won't flatly rule out the possibility. But they're not speculating on what he'll do to keep the current state budget balanced.

Budget Director Duane Goossen says Parkinson still expects to make about $260 million in cuts or other budget adjustments. The governor has said an announcement should come by the end of November.

Senate budget committee Chairman Jay Emler says the state is getting close to needing furloughs.

And House Chairman Kevin Yoder says he doesn't see how Parkinson can trim the budget so much without reducing the state's labor costs.
