Since the inside was bottled up, the St. Mary’s Colgan offense elected to use the outside.
Well ... that worked just fine, as the Panthers racked up 162 rushing yards — mostly coming from the outside — to knock off the Moundridge Wildcats, 41-6, to claim the Class 2-1A regional football championship Saturday afternoon at Hutchinson Field.
The outside was a known weakness for the Wildcats and head coach Courtney Moddelmog knew that it would be used to the Panthers’ advantage.
“We just don’t have the playmakers on the perimeter and it showed,” Moddelmog said.
When the Panthers were not exploiting the outside with the run, they were doing it with the pass, as Colgan exploded for 214 yards in the air, led by backup quarterback Andy Farmer’s 124 yards. Of that, 56 came on a passing strike to Stuart Mitchelson midway through the first quarter.
