Liberal R-2 Schools in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Education and the Convoy of Hope, a nonprofit organization based in Springfield, Mo., participated in a statewide humanitarian effort that will help children in Haiti suffering in the aftermath of the Jan. 12 earthquake.

The Convoy of Hope feeds the hungry and provides drinking water to people across the United States and around the world. The organization has been in Haiti for three years, feeding 11,000 children each day.

It is a “first responder” organization in disaster relief and is on the ground in Haiti providing immediate relief.

Liberal High School Future Business Leaders of America assembled 200 Kits for Kids from requested items donated by Liberal R-2 students in grades pre-school through high school.
Monetary donations were made by Barton County Mutual, Bank of Minden, and Liberal High School Student Council to purchase items to complete kits of shampoo, comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, hand towel, and a bar of anti-bacterial soap.

It was a quick process with a total turn around time of only ten days from the time e-mail notification was sent out by Missouri Department of Education until the completed kits needed to be delivered to Springfield for shipping to Haiti.

Students began bringing donated items to school on Monday, Jan. 25.  Kits were assembled on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 28 and 29.

Two hundred Kits for Kids were loaded by LHS-FBLA members on Monday, February 1 for Liberal Elementary Principal, Leticia Fry, to deliver to Convoy of Hope in Springfield, Missouri by the Feb. 1, 5 p.m. deadline.

The generosity of the families of Liberal R-2 Schools and the community of Liberal, Missouri will make a difference in the lives of 200 children 2,000 miles away.
