Local youth enjoyed Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day on Oct. 4 at the 23rd Street Bike Park in Pittsburg.
When people and organizations of a small town come together for the purpose of helping children, even if it’s for an afternoon, it tends to remind one of what is really important in life and what is vital for the future. An example of this occurred last Sunday when about 15 volunteers came out to the 23rd Street Bike Park to give time to kids and in most cases introduced them to the great sport of mountain biking.
Kids that attended got exposure to a great way to exercise while at the same time have fun, build confidence, and meet new people. Just as important, the parents and adults that attended and or helped got to see the excitement and joy on the faces of the children as they faced and overcame challenges that are a part of mountain biking. Whether it was little 4 year old Sara that rode a tricycle around the cone course nearly the whole time she was there or 8 year old Griffin who arrived at the event unsure of what to do or expect but by the time it was time to go was riding the trails with his guide like he had just found a new best friend. Just as important as the parents and volunteers were the donations by business and groups that helped the event occur. Wheat State Pizza kept the kids full of pizza, the noon Kiwanis Club gave support for prizes and giveaways, and the Pittsburg Police Department provided helmets for the kids that didn’t have them to keep them safe. The members of our club can only say thanks to everyone involved for remembering what is most important, our children.
