8 Wonders of Kansas Geography
With two weeks remaining during the nomination process, some 26 geographic features have been nominated in the Kansas Sampler Foundation’s 8 Wonders of Kansas Geography contest.
And it comes with great pride to say someone has nominated the Strip Pits – The Mined Land Wildlife Area, as one of the 26 nominations received thus far.
I planned to nominate the Mined Land Wildlife Area as well at the Frontier Military Scenic Byway, but it’s satisfying to know I’m not the only person who thought the Strip Pits (the Mined Land Wildlife Area) deserve mention as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Geography.
I mean think about it, what would Crawford, Cherokee and some parts of Labette County look like if it were not for the remnants of the mining industry that have been filled with water and become one of the best kept fishing secrets in Kansas?
I may follow up with a second nomination for the Mined Land Wildlife Area, and then perhaps think of another part of Kansas geography worth nominating.
Perhaps U.S. 400 from Pittsburg to Wichita … why not? Someone else has already nominated Kansas Highway 99 and all 275 miles of it.
I think the 166 mile stretch of 400 from Pittsburg to Wichita could be nominated because it is the only non-Interstate roadway in Kansas that covers five different geographic region in Kansas — it starts in the Cherokee Lowlands here in Pittsburg, into the Osage Cuestas, through the Chautauqua Hills near Fredonia, then back into the Osage Cuestas until you reach the Flint Hills, then a brief jaunt through the Wellington-McPherson Lowlands before your finish in Wichita at the Arkansas River Lowlands.
