Isaiah Smith, 6, has gotten off to a great start in scouting. The Tiger Cub is top popcorn salesman in his group.
“We’re a new group, Pack 287, which was chartered to the Frontenac United Methodist Church and is part of the Mo-Kan Boy Scout District,” Summer Brandt, the “popcorn colonel” in charge of sales, said. “As a new group, we were required to sell at least $1,000 worth of popcorn. Well, Isaiah took care of more than half of that.”
The youngster, a first grade student at Frank Layden Elementary School, sold a total of $534 in popcorn.
“I told them that everybody had to sell at least one thing, and they did,” Brandt added. “All together, they sold $2,757 worth of popcorn. We’re very proud of them.”
She said the pack has nearly 30 members.
Isaiah nodded vigorously when asked if he had worked hard on the sale. He’s also blessed with a supportive family, according to his mother, Charlotte Smith. His aunts and uncles bought popcorn — including one uncle who doesn’t even like the stuff.
As an incentive, Brandt presented the top three popcorn sellers with $15 gift cards.
“Isaiah will also get a special certificate and patch for himself,” she said.
“I’m getting that little red radio and watch,” Isaiah added.
Brandt explained that this is a three-in-one prize that includes a hand-held game, a radio and a watch.
“The pack gets to keep a portion of the sale proceeds,” the popcorn colonel said. “We’ll use that for things like flags, patches and snacks if we go camping.”
