Pittsburg Community Middle School will be hosting a food drive to provide goods for victims of Hurricane Sandy and the rescue workers who are trying to put the east coast back together.
Teresa Spangler, PCMS counselor, is a trained disaster relief responder and spent time helping clean up the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac in August.
“We’re taking items that will specifically help clean up on the east coast,” Spangler said. “We also will send food boxes that will help feed the workers.”
Spangler said PCMS students will write letters of encouragement to the workers and families who are trying to get by. Spangler, who is licensed through Crisis Response International, said she’s organizing the drive because she can’t respond on her own.
“I can’t go because of my responsibility to my students, but this is a way I can help,” Spangler said. “I know the tools they need to work with can be hard to find and difficult to obtain.”
Spangler said donation boxes will be available at PCMS and TH Rogers Lumber Company, at 1701 N. Broadway. Used tools that are in good condition are also accepted. Sponsors include Pitsco, Commerce Bank, R&C Transportation LLC and TH Rogers Lumber Company. Items that are needed include:
