The Pittsburg High School Dance Team won honors Jan. 22 and 23 at the Kansas Spectacular Dance competition, held at Olathe East High School.
K-Spec is a regional dance competition conducted by American Dance and Drill Team near Austin, Texas. Dancers from 34 schools across Kansas participated in the event.
PHS dancers competed in team jazz, lyrical and hip hop categories, receiving the Judges Award in all three. Best Overall awards were won for choreography, precision, technique and presentation. They also received the Sweepstakes, Gussie Nell Award and Winner’s Circle Top Ten awards.
PHS dancers said they were especially proud to receive the Best of the Best Award, which is given to the schools with a combined overall score of 830 or above. Out of the 34 high school teams competing, PHS received the third highest overall combined score of 860.
In addition, the PHS dance team received the Outstanding Team Award.
“This is an award that is voted on by peers, it reflects the mutual respect that each team has towards a team that stands out in every way,” said Joyce Pennington, American Dance and Drill Team president. “I see that an outstanding team is one that not only has exceptional performance skills, but also has integrity and respect for the other teams at the contest and appreciates other teams as well as their own talent. At the Kansas Spectacular, there was one junior team and one high school team chosen for this award.”
She extended her congratulations to the teams.
PHS dancers Mollie Stephens and Jenna Perez also competed in a field of 59 soloists, earning a place in the top 10 Winner’s Circle.
Katie Laidler and Afton Lundy coach the PHS dance team. Choreography for the competition was done by Maggie Stephens and captains Mollie Stephens and Kelsey Parks.
