Grant Deardorff, Webb City, Mo., community manager of health initiatives for the American Cancer Society, said it with cupcakes Wednesday to honor Via Christi Hospital for its excellence in providing care to cancer patients in and around the Pittsburg area.

He brought cupcakes from a favorite Joplin area bakery and personal cards of appreciation to doctors and staff at the Via Christi Cancer Center.

“My goal today is to take minute to thank you all for all you do to help me do my job,” Deardorff said. “I’ve worked nine years with Via Christi and you are doing some wonderful programs here, including ‘I Can Cope’ and ‘Look Good Feel Better’. Thank you for greeting me with a smile. I know some of the things I ask of you can take extra time and effort  for you.”

He said that Via Christi refers patients to the American Cancer Society who need extra services and navigation, and allow the society to teach classes and hold support group meetings at the center.

“A lot of it is just the time and paperwork it takes administratively,” Deardorff said. “When I do a ‘Look Good Feel  Better’ session here, it takes the ladies up front to send out invitations. They help me help patients to deal with a hard situation every day, and their grace and compassion is amazing. It is a privilege for me to work with them.”

He said that his family knows first-hand the quality of care provided at Via Christi.

“My grandfather came through here a few years ago,” Deardorff said. “He’s still  out playing with his tractor and driving his brush hog at 82.”

Rhonda DeWitt, Uniontown, American Cancer Society community manager for nine southeast Kansas counties, was also present at the appreciation ceremony.

She pointed out that Via Christi Hospital also assists the ACS with its annual Relay for Life.

“Via Christi Cancer Center, the ER and financial department have all had Relay for Life times, and we appreciate that help with fundraising,” DeWitt said.

She added that Relay for Life of Crawford County is planning a holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at the  First Church of the Nazarene gym in Pittsburg. Vendor space is $25, and  anyone wishing additional information may contact Kim Harman at 620-249-3324.
