It’s not many artists who get to see their creation rolling around on a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, also known as a Humvee.
But Anson Pruneda, Pittsburg State University senior art major, will have that pleasure.
A student administrative assistant in the PSU military science department, he recently won a national competition to design a vehicle wrap for a Humvee, and said that the wrap is now in the process of being fabricated and applied to the vehicle. It covers both sides and the front and rear portions of the vehicle.
“I got to design something that goes on a Hummer,” Pruneda said. “It’s one of the biggest, broadest canvases out there, besides a van or a box truck.”
Because he won the contest, PSU ROTC will have the use of the Humvee, with his wrap, for a year.
“I’m not sure what will happen after the end of the year,” the student artist said. “They might use it at another school.”
Pruneda call’s his wrap design “Evolution of an Officer.”
“It shows the steps, from being a civilian, to an ROTC cadet to becoming an officer,” he said. “All the photos I used are from Pitt State ROTC, but they could be applied to any school because there’s nothing that says ‘PSU’ on them.”
Pruneda said that Shirley Beer, human resources assistant for the military science department, came up with the idea for the theme.
“I got a lot of satisfaction out of doing the design because I never thought about creating anything like that before,” he said. “Now that it’s actually going to be printed and applied, it makes me want to do more.”
Lt. Col. Don Stoner, military science department chairman, said the combination of the vehicle and Pruneda’s design will make an excellent recruitment tool.
“Anson did a great job capturing the spirit and pride of the Army ROTC Gorilla Battalion,” Stoner said.
Pruneda said that he had been a student employee in the military science department since December 2008.
Originally from Kansas City, he is working toward a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with an emphasis in commercial art, and aims for a career involving digital artwork.
He said that his interest in art started in childhood.
“As a kid I went to all the art classes at the Nelson during the summer,” Pruneda said. “My mother enrolled me in them, but I liked them and kept going during middle school and high school. When I got to Pitt State, I knew I was going to the art department.”
He’ll graduate in May, but the Humvee with his wrap should be delivered to PSU before then.
“I’m just super stoked that it’s going to be on a vehicle and I’ll get to touch it and feel it and see my work roll around campus,” Pruneda said.
