St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Scammon, will have an Italian dinner in conjunction with the St. Joseph’s Table celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the church’s Faith and Family Center.
Menu for the occasion will consist of spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, seafood shells, polenta with sauce, gnocci, breads, Italian sausage and stuffed cabbage. Salads and desserts as well as other delicacies will also be available.
The event will be open to the public. Cost of the full meal $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and free for those 5 and younger.
Traditionally, the Feast of St. Joseph is held on March 19. Over time, it has become a celebration for both the Catholic Church and Italians everywhere.
The St. Joseph’s Table was always associated with thanksgiving for favors received. While it still takes place in some Italian homes, today many are parish events.
Those who visit a St. Joseph’s Table often receive gifts of fava beans and breads. Fava beans play an important part in the celebration because they were the food that saved the Sicilians from starvation. The beans are said to bring good luck, and it is believed that if the St. Joseph’s bread is kept in a home the family will never experience starvation. Participants at these events often leave donations on the table.
There are generally three levels of the table to honor the Holy Trinity and the Holy Family of Jesus, Joseph and Mary. The table is covered with flowers, votive candles and lace tablecloths, with breads baked in shapes to represent Jesus’ crown of thorns, the Cross, Joseph’s cane and the Sacred Heart. There are also often platters of sweets as well as cakes shaped like lambs, Bibles, crosses and angels, along with pastries and other delicacies.
At Scammon the baked goods on the table will be available for purchase.
