Crawford County Genealogical Society will present a free public program on the Frontenac mine explosion of 1888 at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Pittsburg Public Library conference room.
Speaker will be Jerry Lomshek, local historian and researcher. The tragedy was the worst coal mine disaster in Kansas history, and brought about changes in mining laws. More than 40 people were killed and many others injured in the explosion, caused by gas and dust, on Nov. 9, 1888.
It took mine rescue officials two days to extinguish the fires in the mine and remove the bodies of the victims.
Anyone needing additional information may contact the Genealogy Room at the library. The room is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
