Book sale
Southeast Kansas Recycling will have a book sale, open to members only, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the recycling center, 615 S. Joplin. Membership applications will be available at the door.
The sale will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Hardback books will be 25 cents, and paperbacks will be 10 cents. Collectable books will be priced as marked. Fiction and nonfiction books will be available for all age groups.
Alzheimer’s Caregivers
Breakfast Club for Alzheimer’s caregivers will meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Anyone may attend who serves as a caregiver to an individual with Alzheimer’s or a similar dementia.
Speaker will be Dr. Darwin Anderson, psychologist at the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas.
The club offers an opportunity for caregivers to talk with those who have similar issues while having a free breakfast. Anyone needing additional information may call 620-719-0967.
Kiwanis Club
Pittsburg Kiwanis Club will meet at noon Thursday in dePaul Hall, Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center.
Program will be presented by Pittsburg mayor Rudy Draper, who will discuss the new “Honorary Mayor” youth program.
Invocation will be given by Lori Butts, and Forrest Coltharp will be greeter. Bob Casino will serve as cashier.
UMWA
Local 14, District 12, United Mine Workers of America, will have a monthly meeting at 1 p.m. at the Pittsburg American Legion Post 64 post home, 2815 N. Joplin.
Cherokee Senior Citizens
CHEROKEE — Cherokee Senior Citizens Club will meet at 11 a.m. at the Cherokee Community Center for a presentation by Chris Kelly from Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center. A regular meeting will follow.
Monthly potluck dinner will be held at noon with ham, scalloped potatoes and bread furnished by the club, along with beverages and table service.
Those attending are asked to bring items for the Cherokee United Methodist Church food pantry.
Eight and Forty
Crawford County Salon No. 524, Eight and Forty, will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Pittsburg American Legion Post 64 post home. Pat Ogle, chapeau, will preside.
Hostesses will be Dorothy Chirafisi and Dianne Reiken.
Alpha Kappa Chapter
Alpha Kappa Chapter, Phi Tau Omega sorority, will have a monthly social at 5:30 p.m. at Cafe Del Rio, Meadowbrook Mall.
Following dinner, members will go to the movie “A Christmas Carol.” They are asked to wear a favorite Christmas shirt.
Hostesses will be Susan Herrell and Kathy Shaffer. Members unable to attend should contact one of the hostesses.
Frontenac bingo
Frontenac American Legion will sponsor bingo, open to the public, every Thursday at the Frontenac Senior Citizens Center.
Doors will open at 5 p.m., and play starts at 6:30 p.m. A total of 16 games are played, and the evening usually ends about 8:30 p.m.

School skate
Lakeside Elementary School PTO will sponsor a school skate from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lowe’s Skateway.
PSU band concert
Pittsburg State University bands will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium.
Featured will be the PSU Wind Ensemble and the Chamber Winds, conducted by Dr. Craig Fuchs, PSU director of bands and music department chairman.
The program will open with “Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld” by Jacques Offenbach. Graduate student conductor Gustavo Aquino will be featured in “As Torrents in Summer” by Edward Elgar.
Members of the PSU Opera Workshop will be guest vocalists for “Of Sailors and Whales” by Francis McBeth. PSU Chamber Winds will then perform “Suite Francaise” by French composer Darius Milhaud. The concert will conclude with Robert W. Smith’s “Twelve Seconds to the Moon.”
“The public is invited to share in an evening of fine band music,” said Fuchs.
