Frontenac Rotary
Frontenac Rotary Club will meet at noon in the Bosco Center, located in the basement of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Frontenac.
Blake Benson, Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, will present the program. Greeter will be Paul Mendicki, and fulfilling duties as sergeant at arms will be Gary Miller.
Rotary will offer a lunch for $7. Featured this week will be pork roast, gravy, potatoes, vegetable, salad and beverage.
The club will sponsor a chili feed from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 29 in the Frontenac High School cafeteria. Featured will be chili, a chili dog or soup with dessert or beverage for $5. All proceeds will be used to help adopt five families for Christmas.

Poetry reading
Allison Berry and Eric Dutton, graduate students in the Pittsburg State University English department, will defend their creative theses in the form of a poetry reading at 5 p.m. in the Special Collections Room of Axe Library.
The reading will be open to the public.
Both are Pittsburg natives. Berry will defend her poetry thesis titled “Home Worlds,” which explores the evolution of her relationship with home. Relying heavily on the natural world, the poems attempt to shift the focus of the reader from humanity to nature. Many of the poems discuss gender issues, feminism and anarchism.
Berry is a 1997 Pittsburg High School graduate and received her bachelor’s degree in philosophy and women’s studies in 2001 from Cornell College.
Dutton’s thesis, “Winter Engine,” shows an imaginative view of the world, and the poems are informed by vision, daydream and fantasy. In the poems, light reflecting in a train evokes a great archetypal lake, and a man’s daughter becomes an entire continent.
Dutton is a 1995 PHS graduate and earned a bachelor of arts in English from PSU in 2000. He was co-founder of the Twin Bird reading series, and used to read poetry regularly at Stella’s Coffee House and other Pittsburg locations.
“I’m so excited about this defense,” said Laura Lee Washburn, PSU creative writing director. “This is the third joint defense we’ve offered since our master of arts program in creative writing began just four years ago. It’s wonderful to be able to share the work of these wonderful poets with an audience.”
