The Carona Railroad Site will be open free to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The site is located two miles west of Scammon on Kansas Highway 102, and 1/4 mile south.
The site includes two former Missouri Pacific depots, remodeled from the original depot located at Carona and at Boston, Mo., along the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
There are also two maintenance of way motor car sheds which house motor cars used to work on the railroad track, five cabooses from various railroads used in the southeast Kansas area, a box car and a refrigerator.
A three-car passenger train, based at the site, is used to give public rides in area towns during special community events, riding on tracks belonging to the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad. SK&O Railroad is owned by the Webb family under the corporate name of Watco, with national headquarters at Pittsburg.
Also at the site is an extensive collection of railroad signals used to control train movements, as well as grade crossing devices which warn vehicles of an approaching train.
The Carona visitors center houses numerous items related to the history of area railroading, along with a collection of wooden steam locomotive models. The building also serves as the meeting place of the Heart of the Heartlands rail fan group, which meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. Meetings are open to anyone interested in saving local railroad history.
