Parents University

Crawford County Parents University will celebrate its 20th anniversary from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the lower level of Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium.

There will be sessions on “Dance Together,” “Make Music Together,” “Create Together” and “Cook Together.”  Family photos will be taken from 5 to 6 p.m. and around 30 agencies will have booths at the event.

A 25-cent sack lunch will be available.  All families participating will receive a free family fun pack.

Sunflower Kiwanis
Sunflower Kiwanis Club will meet at 6:45 a.m. in dePaul Hall, Via Christi Hospital. Program chairman Elwyn Davis will introduce speaker Matt Murray, Pittsburg State University baseball coach.

Lindy Lawson, president-elect, will report on feedback from the Meadowlark K-Kids meeting and on the flag distribution held on 9/11.  American-made yard flags are available by calling Carole Robb, flag program chairman, at 230-0467. All funds raised are used for children’s services.

Girard Lions
GIRARD — Girard Lions Club will meet at noon in the Girard Medical Center classroom. Special guests will be Bill Kincaid, Lions district governor, and Mike Payne, Girard Medical Center CEO.

Lunch will be served. Anyone needing additional information or reservations may call 620-362-3781.

The club is collecting used eyeglasses and hearing aids to be recycled for less fortunate persons. Lions are also collecting used cell phones and accessories which will benefit Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Collection boxes are located at Eastside Diner, Girard Public Library, Dr. Randall R. Holloway’s office, Dr. S. Mitchell’s Eye Center of Girard, Girard Medical Center, Girard Senior Citizens Center, Highway Inn and T.J. Belcher’s State Farm Insurance Agency.

Girard blood drive
GIRARD — American Red Cross will conduct a community blood drive from noon to 5:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Hall, Girard. The drive is being sponsored by the Girard Medical Center Auxiliary.

Patty Leeds, district coordinator for the drive, said that all blood types are needed.

Rotary Club
Pittsburg Rotary Club will meet at noon in dePaul Hall, Via Christi Hospital.

Peggy Snyder of Pittsburg Salvation Army Emergency Response will present the program on “What We Learned from the Joplin Tornado.”

Tom Sims will deliver the invocation, and Judy Westhoff will be song leader. Andy Meyers will have introductions.

Voter registration
Women’s Alliance for Voter Education, a bipartisan group, will register voters from noon until 1 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 16 at the Pittsburg Public Library.

Members will be in the library lobby with registration forms and advance ballot forms. Voting laws have changed, and those wishing to register to vote will need to show their driver’s license or the last four digits of their Social Security number.

Book discussion
Pittsburg Public Library will have its monthly book discussion at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s second-floor seminar room.

Topic will be the novel “The Postmistress” by Sarah Blake. Although participants are encouraged to read the book prior to  discussion, it is not required.

The Oct. 16 discussion will be over the book “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson.

Rob Morris OES
Rob Morris Chapter No. 74, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Robert Hess, worthy grand patron of the Grand Chapter of Kansas, will make his official visit.

During an open meeting prior to the regular session the grand patron will present 50-year pins to Roy Surridge, Eileen Surridge, Rose Mary Senecaut and Dorothy Richards. He will also  present 25-year  pins to Kim Plouvier and Carolyn Zagonel.

The chapter will then open in regular form for the transaction of business with Jeanine Blessant, worthy matron, and Roy Surridge, worthy patron, presiding. A short reception will follow.

Zumba class
Jessica Wakeman will offer a zumba class from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Homer Cole Community Center, 3003 N. Joplin.

There will be a $5 fee for the class. Anyone needing additional information may call the center at 231-9773.

Scottish Rite
FORT SCOTT — Coffee and doughnuts will be served at 8 a.m. every Tuesday at the Scottish Rite Center, 110 S. Main, Fort Scott.

There will be no set agenda or predetermined topic, simply conversation among friends. Everyone is welcome to attend,  and need not be Scottish Rite members or Masons.  Men attending are welcome to bring their wives or friends.

ARMA TOPS
ARMA — The ARMA TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays.
Chapter meetings include private weigh-in, information on good nutrition, educational programs and moral support and encouragement to help members reach their weight loss goals.

Arma bingo
ARMA — Arma American Legion will have bingo night, starting with early bird games at 6:30 p.m. Regular games will follow immediately after the early bird games.

Elks bingo
Pittsburg Elks Lodge will host bingo night, open to the public. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with card sales at 5:30 p.m. and mini games at 6 p.m.  Regular games begin at 6:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be available.

Super progressive will be 32 numbers for $311, and cake progressive will be 45 numbers for $458.
Blackout will be 55 numbers for $300. Cherry Stripper pull tabs and Play Ball pull tabs are available. If there are 50 or more players, a special bingo event will be played on the super progressive.

Wing night
Wing night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pittsburg American Legion Post 64, 2815 N. Joplin, for members and their guests.

There will be a choice of four flavors of wings and fries.
