Homemade dog treats and puppy paw art will be included during the first Bark in the Park, scheduled Saturday morning in front of Lincoln Center.
The newest Southeast Kansas Humane Society fundraiser, the event will start with registration at 8 a.m., followed by an optional half-mile walk at 9 a.m. Dog owners may also register in advance at the SEK Humane Society animal shelter or at the Doggie Bag, 510 N. Broadway.
“A lot of the larger humane societies already have some sort of dog walk fundraiser in place, and we thought Pittsburg needed one, too,” said Leslie Harris, society public relations director. “People tend to treat their dogs like one of the family and would love the opportunity to make their dog feel special. This is the day to do it, and help homeless animals at the same time.”
Registration fee is $25, which provides event access for a dog and his or her favorite human, along with a doggie bandana and an event T-shirt, plus participation in scheduled activities.
“The Pittsburg Fire Department will have a fire truck there, and owners can get in with their dog for a photo,” Harris said. “We’re also making a photo board with the faces cut out, so people can stick their faces in and have their photos taken as a dog or cat. We’re planning on using this board at other events as well.”
Pawprints on the Heartland will have paw art.
“We’ll use finger paints on the dogs’ paws, then have them walk on poster board to make art,” Harris said. “We’ll be using the same non-toxic paint that children use, and we’ll have volunteers with water and rags to wipe the paint off the dogs’ paws afterward so they won’t try to lick it off.”
KOAM TV will have a booth where pet owners can frost doggie treats, which are much more appetizing.
“We’re hoping to make this an annual event, and in the future we’d like to have veterinarians on site,” Harris said. “We will have Lorraine Achey present with her dog to demonstrate dog acupressure points.”
Several area businesses will offer dog-related items such as dog accessories and homemade dog treats.
“We’ll also be giving away lots of door prizes,” Harris said.
All dogs must be up-to-date on their immunizations, be on a leash at all times and be well behaved around other dogs. Pitbulls will not be permitted because of city ordinances.
