PSU reading
Author Kevin Brockmeier will present a free public reading from his work at 8 p.m. in the Governors Room of the Overman Student Center, Pittsburg State University.
His appearance is part of the PSU Distinguished Visiting Writers Series, sponsored by the PSU English department and the Student Fee Council.
Brockmeier is the author of eight books, including the novels “The Truth About Celia” and “The Brief History of the Dead,” and the short story collection “Things That Fall from the Sky.”
His most recent novel, “The Illumination,” was praised by the New York Times Book Review as “Lush...At once dark and profound.” It centers on the idea that one day, for unknown reasons, all wounds, both physical and emotional, become illuminated by a light from within the wound itself. No longer can people or animals hide their hurts. This change drastically affects how people treat one another, and a whole new social code has to be constructed.
In an interview with the online journal Web del Sol, Brockmeier said, “I do think the universe we live in is itself a fantastic place, filled with wonders, and that our minds are constructed so as to see within the world around us reflections of our own consciousness.”
The author has received several awards, including the Nelson Algren Award for Short Fiction, three O. Henry Awards and a fiction fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.”
Following the reading will be a reception in the Heritage Room. Copies of Brockmeier’s books will be available for purchase.
