A Christmas dinner was held at the farm of Larry and Vickie Shead, rural Garland. Guests were Craig and Danielle Hermiller, Detroit, Mich., Charles Corporon and Rose Campbell, Pittsburg, and Mary V. Shead, Arcadia. Another gathering at the Shead farm on Dec. 29 included Larry and Vickie Shead, Mark, Haley, Katy and Benjamin Shead of Fort Scott, Charles Corporon and Rose Campbell, Pittsburg, Ralph and Cindy Shead of Carl Junction, Mo., Matthew and Ashley Shead of Joplin, Erin Shead and Sarah Shead from California, and Mary Virginia Shead, Arcadia.
Mary V. Shead received a Christmas gift, a book titled “Trust and Obey,” from Dorothy Quier. The book tells the story of the lives of Mrs. Quier and husband George Quier. They are former teachers in the Arcadia school system, and Quier also served as Arcadia High School principal. During their married life the couple has lived in Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, New Mexico and Colorado. In addition, they spent time in Ohio, Washington, D.C., Costa Rica, Alaska, Hawaii, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Nova Scotia and 40 other U.S. states. Quier has built and remodeled many of the homes they have had over the years. Their daughter, Cheri, is a lawyer. Their son, Jeff Quier, died in 1996 from cancer. His family now lives in Wichita.
Arcadia Christian Church JOY Sunday School Class had a monthly dinner on Dec. 17. Present were Charles and Willa Cable, Gary and Patty Peterson, Wayne and Christie Parrish, Cathy Allen, Pat and Jim Krieger, Michelle Castro and Mary V. Shead.
Approximately 80 boxes of cookies were packed to give to friends of the class. Next JOY Class meeting will be Jan. 21.
Presbyterian Village invited everyone to come for a “Tour of the Trees” on Dec. 13. Many attended and saw the theme-decorated Christmas trees. Appetizers and holiday beverages were served.

Shead attended Fort Scott Community Church Dec. 30 with her son and wife, Larry and Vickie Shead, grandson and wife Mark and Haley Shead and two of her great-grandchildren, Katy and Benjamin Shead. Among those she saw and was greeted by were Lewis Kalm, Ruth Waring and daughter Brenda, Sam Jackson, Jon Bailes, Roger and Ronda Bailey, Jerry and Judy Witt, Steve and Janet Armstrong, Carey Lockwood, Ron and Karen Billiard and Kevin Moyers. Mrs. Shead’s late husband, Paul Shead, formerly did business with Grant Lockwood, father of Carey Lockwood. Several people told Mrs. Shead that they enjoyed reading her Arcadia news items each week in the newspaper.

Mae Watt recently enjoyed a family get-together in the home of Bill and Karen Watt, Napoleon, Mo. The 41 relatives present were Bruce and Nancy and Ella Watt, James Watt and Abby, Robin and Charlotte, Michael and Elena Watt, Mary Watt and Trinity, Kriss and Ilene Carter, Delton Watt Jr., Aaron and Jenne Edwards and A.J. and Hali, Tim and Alyce Hutchinson and Alex Peyton, Kayla and Kaydem, Tom and Phyllis Watt, Tom Watt Jr., Jennie Woodward and Dawson, Austin, Tracey, Sydeny and Trent Siemens, Jeff, Julie and Alex Ralson, Allen, Linda and Doug Watt.
Class No. 10 met Dec. 16 in the Arcadia Christian Church bungalow with eight women present. Patty Peterson, president, opened the meeting by reading an article about a special tree with deeper roots. All gave pledges to the U.S. and Christian flags, followed by the Lord’s Prayer. During roll call, each woman told of her plans for Christmas. A gift check was written for presentation to Pastor Charles and Willa Cable on Christmas Sunday. Each woman brought treats for refreshments, which were served with coffee. Present were Cathy Allen, Judy Rawlings, Evelyn Bryant, Machelle Castro, Betty Dehn and Mary V. Shead.
Recent guests of John and Vera Parrish, Pittsburg, were Angela and Jeff King and children, Tulsa, Okla. Other recent guests were Tara VanLeeuwen and friend Nick Rogers, who were visiting from Florida and attended church in Arcadia on Christmas Sunday with more Parrish family members.
Arcadia friends were sorry to read of the death of James Porter, 68, on Dec. 2, 2012, at Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg. The son of Arnold and Corrine Porter, he grew up and attended schools near Liberal, Mo., and graduated from Liberal High School.
Jodie Dunn wrote from the Philippines that she enjoyed a visit to the mission she and the late Galen Dunn established a few years ago. She will soon be returning to her home in the United States. The weekend before Christmas, Mitzi and Joel Ray, with children Cademon, Atalie and Ryan Ray, visited Rhema Bible Institute in Oklahoma to view the Christmas lights. This is the Christian school where Galen Dunn received his degree.
Due to illness, Jack and Harriett Corporon were unable to attend their yearly Christmas caroling in Brooklyn, N.Y. The group has dinner out together following the entertaining.
Mary V. Shead was honored on her 94th birthday by her sons and their families, Larry and Vickie Shead, rural Garland, and their son, Mark and Haley Shead, Katy and Benjamin, and her other son, Ralph and Cindy Shead, Carl Junction, Mo. They ate Dec. 10 at Long John Silvers in Fort Scott, with a large decorated cake served following dinner. The two children assisted in opening gifts for “Mimi,” their great-grandmother.
