Northeast High School varsity Scholars’ Bowl team took first place honors Monday at the Girard High School Invitational Scholars’ Bowl Tournament.
Also competing were 15 other teams from Pittsburg, Fort Scott, Girard, Iola, Chanute, Oswego, Baxter Springs, Humboldt, Colgan, Crest Colony, Uniontown, Frontenac, Cherokee, St. Paul and Chetopa.
The Humboldt team was knocked out in the final round on the question, “What is Japanese wine called?” Chris Ward, NHS senior captain, correctly answered, “Sake.”
The NHS team made it to the final round by beating Pittsburg High School with the answer to, “What holiday occurs in Great Britain and Canada right after Christmas?” Junior Elizabeth Banks answered, “Boxing Day.”
Banks also provided the correct answer to beat host school Girard in a tie-breaker in the first of three rounds of finals.
“Neither Girard nor Pittsburg could believe Northeast had beaten them in the final rounds,” said freshman Brittny Neil. “Disbelief was all over their faces.”
“Hoo-hahs were flying as the team exited the finals room,” said Barbara Crim, team advisor. “It was excitement central. I just couldn’t believe it. They silently and powerfully came from behind to win the entire tournament.”
“I skipped all the way home from the corner where Crim let me out,” said Sam Truesdell, senior.
“The Girard tournament is one of our largest and toughest,” Crim said. “This is the first time in history we have won it. Linda Knoll, reader of the final round, congratulated Chris Ward and the entire team for answering some difficult questions.”
“We have seven more meets,” Ward said. “My intentions are easy to guess — win, win, win.”
Junior varsity team didn’t score any wins Monday night, but each member answered multiple questions and they came within five points of winning a match, according to Crim. They also won two rounds at the season-opener at Oswego High School. The varsity also won two matches at Oswego.
Next tournament will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Colgan High School. There will be two varsity teams playing.
