A spectacular fireworks display at Farlington Lake was well attended. Thanks to everyone who helped.
Jerry, Teresa, Dehn and David Davenport hosted a fireworks party for 27 people. Also included were food, desserts and swimming.
No dominoes were played this week.
There were not many in church Sunday, but 18 children attended.
Carol Davenport, Bob Noe, Jackie Tonn and Melinda Humble celebrated birthdays.
A total of 27 attended a birthday party for Bob Noe.
Jackie Tonn would enjoy birthday greetings from her friends.
Marcia Bowersock, Fort Scott, and Matthew and Madison Bowersock, Coffeyville, visited Sunday evening with Mary Hughes.

Mary Coonrod Bournonville, formerly of the Cato area, wrote from her home in Sun City, Ariz., about a family reunion held June 6 in Gunn Park, Fort Scott. She is the only one left in her family, since all six of her brothers have died. The group attended the Good Ol’ Days activities in Fort Scott and visited the Large and Coonrod Cemeteries, the Cato Christian Church and the historic Cato School House.
Ernestine and Forrest Berkey went to Kansas City last weekend to visit her sister, Ruby Van Dusen, who has returned home after recent visits to the hospital. Angela and Kristen and Bethany Redd traveled with them. They all visited Mrs. Van Dusen’s son, Jim Ward.
Guests over the Good Ol’ Days weekend at the Shead farm in rural Garland included Jim and Donna Kaster and son David, a former student at Faith Christian Academy in Fort Scott, his wife Audrey and their daughter Lily, 2, Columbia, Mo. Because of wind, the cookout and s’mores were made on the grill and served to all. Other guests present were Mark, Haley and Katie Shead, Haley Shead’s sister from Huntsville, Texas, and her children, Mrs. Simeon Pruski, Seth and Alexandria, Maria Shead, Tulsa, Okla., and Mary V. Shead, Arcadia.
Mildred Michie and her sister, Vera Parrish, both of Pittsburg, helped their sister, Ethel Russell, celebrate her 89th birthday in her Girard home by taking her cake and ice cream. Others joining the party were John Parrish and Kathy Cherry.
Lt. and Mrs. Craig Hermiller marched July 4 in the Junction City parade, then drove to Fort Scott that afternoon. Mrs. Hermiller is a friend of Maria Shead from teaching with her in Tulsa, Okla., and they met her at the Shead farm in rural Garland. Other guests at dinner that evening were Bill Dobbins, Frontenac, Charles Corporon, Pittsburg, Cayla Probst, Jasper, Mo., and the Sheads.
Gary Peterson and Herman Tyler intended to attend the July 4 parade in Seneca, Mo., but it was rained out, so they had breakfast at the Jamie Diner, then went on to Roaring River for lunch. They also attended the Pow Wow in Quapaw, Okla. Back in Arcadia, Gary and Patty Peterson attended the annual July 4 fish fry and fireworks in the Jewel Center at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Morris.
Brent and Christa Zeller, Jillian, Brent Jr. and Miley came to Arcadia to visit and help in the clean-up of the burned God’s Coffee House. Joyce Stephens donated the use of her equipment that Zeller and Lou Dehn used to clean up the remains after a fire destroyed the building and contents in late June. The Dehns said that they have not given up on future plans to have a youth gathering in a new location. The Zellers attended Arcadia Christian Church services Sunday morning and the church dinner before leaving for their home in Missouri.
A total of 18 attended the Arcadia Christian Church dinner July 5. Gary Peterson, teacher, delivered chicken from Chicken Marys and also furnished the sweet corn served with the chicken and other special dishes. The chicken was compliments of the Watt family this July. Other guests at the dinner were Rhonda Brown and Malaki, Girard, and Brandy Mellon with her daughter Cheyenne.

Addie Madl is currently taking applications for the Headstart children. You may contact the office in Girard for more information. Addie will be in charge of the summer reading program on Mondays at the library. This Monday, they read Duncan the Dancing Duck. Participated in the I am Learning, I am Moving cirriculum. Peanut butter and crackers with juice was served for snacks. Seven children participated. Tim Harmon has recently purchased the apartments. He is doing some maintenance on them, he wiil have them ready to rent by the end of July. Contact him for more details. Rick and Daniell Leighty have purchased the home on West Robbins. They are doing some remodeling and hope to be moved in by the end of July. Di and Jerry Snively from Aurora Colo., and his sister Pearl from Dunavan, Mo., was here visiting his niece Addie and Mike Madl.
