Arcadia
A reunion of the G.W. and Portteus Corporon family was held during the Memorial Day weekend with 46 family members and close friends present for the four-day gathering at Lamplighter Inn, Pittsburg. Many attended the Arcadia Alumni dinner May 24. Jack Corporon presented the Corporon Scholarship to Laura Brooke Williams, Lawrence. She is the granddaughter of Lee Roy and Patricia Smith Wright, Arcadia High School graduates.
The Corporons also participated in many activities, including golf, viewing the Pittsburg State University campus, driving around Arcadia and having dinner in familiar places such as Harry’s Cafe in Pittsburg. On May 25, 24 family members and friends were among the 70 attending services at the Arcadia Christian Church. Jack Corporon lead a brief memorial service in remembrance of their sister, Margaret Corporon Wickstrom, who died in February. Mark Shead was pianist for congregational singing, which include “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” a favorite song of Mrs. Wickstrom.
A picnic was held on the patio of the Larry and Vickie Shead farm home, rural Garland, for the rest of Sunday afternoon.
The night before the Arcadia Alumni banquet, guests at the Lamplighter Inn were told that the International Space Station was to be flying over the Kansas area and would be visible over Pittsburg. Just before 9 p.m. May 23, many people gathered outside the inn and saw the bright light as the station orbited across the sky. Ralph Shead, Carl Junction, Mo., shared the information.
Cindy and Ralph Shead represented Learning and Teaching Ministries of Joplin as they spoke June 1 at the First Christian Church, Edmond, Okla. Shead’s aunt, the former Margaret Corporon Wickstrom, formerly lived in Edmond.
Brian and Gabrille Studer and Mark and Haley Shead with Katy, all from Fort Scott, were recent dinner guests at the farm home of Larry and Vickie Shead, rural Garland. Mrs. Studer is a teacher at Fort Scott High School.
