Ziggie's Cafe, located at 2711 N. Broadway, will open for business at 6 a.m. on Friday. The new restaurant occupies the former Bamboo Palace building.
American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive from 1 to 6:30 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Church of the Nazarene.
Theme will be “Rock and Roll Up Your Sleeves,” and donors will receive a special rocker-style T-shirt. They will also have an opportunity to win “Second Helping,” an authentic Lynyrd Skynyrd platinum album.
Girard High School class of 1960 gathered June 13 at the Madison House, Girard, for its 48-year class reunion.

Theme of the summer children’s reading program is “Catch the Reading Bug,” and in keeping with this, the library will host an exhibit of insects from the Sedgwick County Zoo at 10:30 a.m.
Michael Bicknell, master of Pittsburg Masonic Lodge No. 187, has announced final selection of Frontenac and Pittsburg High School musicians for the 2008 Kansas Masonic All-State High School Band.
Selection is made on the basis of musical ability, instrument needs of the proposed band, timely application and other issues.

Author Max McCoy has been notified by State Librarian Christie P. Brandau that his novel “Hellfire Canyon” has been named a 2008 Kansas Notable Book.
Formerly of Pittsburg, he is now on the faculty at Emporia State University.
Two years ago I was perusing the “New Book” shelves, not finding anything that particularly grabbed me, so I picked up “Love Walked In” which I remembered had positive reviews in several library publications. And the book grabbed me. Big time. It’s still one of my favorite all-time reads.
A benefit dinner and auction for Dale “Dirt” Westhoff will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. June 7 at the Girard American Legion.
Westhoff recently suffered a major stroke, and is in the process of recovery. Donations will help with his medical and other expenses.
Dinner, available for a free-will offering, will include pulled prok, baked beans, green beans, potato salad, slaw and desserts. Carry-out will be available.
Auction items will be displayed throughout the dinner, with the live auction beginning at 7 p.m.

Lawrence Hill, principal of Northeast Junior High School, has announced honor rolls for the fourth nine-week grading period and the second semester of the 2007-2008 academic year.
Students on the all A honor roll for the fourth nine-week grading period were as follows: Cole Courtney, Kasey Green, Janelle Pew, Cole Robinson and Piper Sloan, eighth grade; Tori Bastion and Brittny Neil, seventh grade; and Andrew Ashbacher, Tyler Lakey, Joseph Polhlopek and Amy Williams, sixth grade.
Four days of festivities are planned in celebration of Galena’s 131st birthday.
All programs will be free to the public. The event, sponsored by the Galena Volunteer Fire Department, will feature a performance by “Confederate Railroad” at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The annual Hallowell reunion will be held at 1 p.m. June 8 at the Cherokee County 4-H Building in Columbus. Building will open at noon.

On a day when I was wondering why no one had nominated me for a major award because I was able to get three beds stripped and cleaned and remade, a colorful and balanced supper on the table, a toddler entertained on my own from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., an entertaining column written and submitted, and a first grader taken to school with everything he needed and brought home with nothing that he didn't, I received this in my inbox.
