Participants in the “Catch the Reading Bug @ the Library/Metamorphosis” at the Weir Public Library have built a giant honeycomb pollinating oversized sunflowers.
Books that really “bugged” them were available for participants to help complete “Busy Bee” activity packs.

A mutant Kansas sunflower seed traveled around the library until it decided to take root behind the video case and blossomed into giant flowers. It was replaced by a painted butterfly that flew around. Patrons who caught the butterfly earned a sweet treat.

With all of the sunflowers being pollinated by the state insect, the honey bee, the guessing jar was full of sunflower seeds. Four library patrons received a prize for guessing the closest to the 5,300 total. Winners were Alyssa Becker, Trentin Christeson, Karen Thompson and Emily Pine.

Participants helped rub and stamp out bugs in the library on days they weren’t making caterpillar rings, fuzzy pin crawler magnets, pretty stink bugs, spoonbill grasshoppers, doodle bugs, beetle bug racers, spider hats, cobweb soup, itsy-bitsy spiders, bug sun catchers, Boo-Boo bugs and mini Weir flyswatters.

Readers could also watch movies or listen to the “Queen Bee” Stef Arbuckle read funny books about insects.

Representatives of Hamblin and Son Apiaries, Weir, presented a program July 25 on beekeeping. Those attending were able to ask questions and sample fresh honey.
Bee cupcakes were served, along with “nectar” sucked up with bee sippers.

The “maggot gang read 3,801 books in six weeks. A total of 37 worms exceeded their goals. All maggots received a prize package containing rewards from area businesses.

Top readers were: PreK-K, Jace Coltrane, 201; Grades 1-2, Harley Reagan, 110; Grades 5-6, Ashton Coltrane, 201; Grades 7-8, Madison Martin, 81; Grades 9-10, Jecilyn Antoni, 106; and John Becker, special merit, 117. Out-of-the-hive winner was in Grades 3-4, Taylor Beckley, 447 books.

“Worker bees” this year helping, cleaning, moving furniture and assisting with crafts were Scooter Arbuckle and Rachael Holden. Special commendation went to Tim Holden for construction of the honeycomb.
