PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg school board accepted the resignation of high school Principal Jon Bishop during Monday’s meeting.
Effective July 1, Bishop, the Pittsburg High School principal, will take over as principal at SEK Interlocal 637 in Girard. Pittsburg Superintendent of Schools Destry Brown said the district will miss Bishop.
“He’s been a great asset to the district he's been a dragon through and through,” Brown said. “He bleeds purple.”
Bishop is a PHS graduate and continued his education at Pittsburg State University, earning a bachelor’s in elementary education.
“It felt like the right time for a new challenge,” Bishop said recently.
He said overseeing fewer students should mean more time to spend with his family. Bishop will take over for SEK Principal Nick Cheney, who is retiring at the end of the school year.
Brown said the district has the job listed, adding he hopes to have an applicant for the school board to approve by the end of February.
SEK Interlocal 637 is a program sponsored by 13 Southeast Kansas districts and provides special education services to schools.
