PITTSBURG — DaVita Dialysis’ $2,000 donation on Monday to Pittsburg Meals and Wheels will help feed hundreds of people.
A group of representatives from the nonprofit were at the company’s Pittsburg location, which opened at the end of last year, to receive the check. Meals on Wheels Project Manager Jane Park said the donation “helps us to meet the demand.”
The nonprofit serves roughly 60 to 65 people in the Pittsburg area each day. Meals cost the group $3 each, and the people they serve pay between $1.25 and $3.25, based on their income, for lunch to be delivered to the front door.
DaVita Facility Advisor Sue Emmert said the location across from Via Christi opened in September 2016 after a year of construction. She was unsure of the cost of the building.
Emmert said the company chose Meals on Wheels because they both serve people who need help.
“We just want to help the community by serving the people unable to serve themselves,” Emmert said.
The brand-new location is still waiting to be evaluated by the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services before it can serve people with diabetes and high blood pressure. Emmert said she was unsure how long the process would take, but she has already begun making a waiting list.
Currently, the Pittsburg location only has two employees. Emmert said more employees will be added as the location opens for business.
Dialysis takes about four hours and the center has roughly 12 chairs available with TVs at each. The location will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Eventually, Emmert said the facility will be open everyday of the week except Sunday. The Pittsburg location can be reached at 620-231-0656.
Additionally, Meals on Wheels is in need of volunteers to deliver food. The delivery usually takes one hour and is once a week. Drivers can also get paid to deliver food. For more information, contact Jane Park at 620-231-4880.
