PITTSBURG — A national meal texting hotline service can help children and parents find free meal sites through the Summer Food Service Program.
The system was developed by No Kid Hungry and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is part of the No Kid Hungry Campaign operated by Share Our Strength, which focuses on connecting children with healthy food to end childhood hunger.
Pittsburg has three locations, Pittsburg Community Middle School, Lakeside Elementary and Westside Elementary and is open to all children and teens from one to 18. There is no registration or identification is required.
“We try to do this every year,” Pittsburg USD 250 Nutrition Assistant Brandi Laech said. “We have a good turn turn out giving children a nice, healthy meal.”
According to Laech, the district will use the same food vendor as it uses during the school year, National Dairy Council.
The menu is accessible through USD 250’s website on the “Food Services” page under “Menu.”
Outside of Pittsburg, parents can find meal sites by texting the word “food” and their zip code to 877-877 and the locations and hours will be texted back. Parents can access meal sites in spanish by texting the word “comida” to the same number.
“One of the biggest barriers to kids getting the food they need in the summer months is that families simply don’t know help is available,” Program Manager for No Kid Hungry’s Center for Best Practices Derrick Lambert said in a release. “We wanted to find a quick, streamlined way for folks to find summer meals, so No Kid Hungry developed the texting program.”
