FRONTENAC — USD 249 Board of Education President Mike Bitner resigned his position at the board’s July meeting, only to be reappointed to a longer term.

The board discussed replacing the open position left by Randy Flora upon his resignation in June. Bitner and Heather Eckstein applied for the open position.

Bitner submitted his letter of resignation from the board effective immediately and it was accepted by the board. Bitner was then nominated by the board to fill the advertised position left by Randy Flora, and approved to take that position.

Bitner was originally elected in April 2013, and his position was slated to expire this year, meaning he would face an election in November. However Flora’s position — which Bitner will now serve out — does not expire until December 31, 2019.

According to the Crawford County Clerk’s Office, Bitner had not filed to run for his position again. The filing deadline was June 1.

After Bitner was sworn in and rejoined the council, Anthony Menghini moved to reappoint Bitner as president of the board. The motion was approved unanimously .

Flora submitted his resignation at the board’s may meeting, effective May 31.

Attempts to reach the school board or USD 249 administration by press time were unsuccessful.

The legality of an appointment done in this manner was not clear as of press time.
