FRONTENAC  — The USD 249 school board discussed the district’s capital outlay resolution which expires April 19, 2019 at Monday night’s meeting. The district currently is at a four mill capital outlay levy.

According to the minutes, since the law governing capital outlay has changed the resolution can be published up to eight mills. It also states the board can determine when the budget is built if they pass a new resolution and they can levy up to the eight mills in the budget dependent on the district’s needs. One mill is equal to $1 per $1,000 of assessed value.

A few of the board members had a recent visit with Kansas Commissioner of Education Randy Watson about Kansas Vision for Education, which focuses on a student-focused system with support and resources for individual success.

The board members shared their thoughts about meeting with the commissioner at the board meeting.

The board took action on a mower, trailer and van purchase.

They also took action to approve the resignation of Paul Mike Harvey as custodian and approved the hiring of Keith Aikin as head JH wrestling coach, Morgan Russel as custodian, Manana Jajo as custodian, and Russell Taylor as custodian.

Simoncic reported on many items one of which was the update on the FEMA grant. He said the application is complete and will be submitted on October 15.

Simoncic also spoke to the board about the board member candidate forum, which will start at 7 p.m. on October 24 in the Frontenac Town Hall. Simoncic said the public is invited to come to the forum to learn about the candidates.

The school had an inspection by the Crawford County Health Department. Simoncic said the inspection was passed and there were no problems.
