PITTSBURG — Countryside Christian Church is bringing the story of Jesus’s birth to life this weekend with Journey to Bethlehem.
Journey to Bethlehem is a live-action portrayal of the nativity story, complete with actors, live animals and effects. CCC will perform the story from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
“This is something we do around Christmas time, because we primarily view it as a gift to our community,” Lead Minister Bryce Hotchkiss said. “It’s a way to reach out to people to tell them who we are and why we celebrate Christmas in regard to the birth of Jesus.”
CCC has hosted Journey to Bethlehem around 10 times and has done the tour every other year for the past few years. Hotchkiss said it is a unique way to tell the story to those who are familiar with it and those who are not.
“The actors and animals make it more than just a story,” he said. “It really comes alive.”
The evenings will also include live music and entertainment. Visitors are asked to park across the street at Pittsburg High School, where a shuttle will pick them up and bring them to the outdoor tour.
“We will be giving tours over the periods of six to nine and five to eight,” Hotchkiss said. “The tour takes about 15 minutes, and we will have live music and entertainment for folks while they wait for the next tour to begin.”
The live entertainment will be indoors while people wait, as well as cookies and hot refreshments. The church is located at 1901 E. 4th Street. Visitors are encouraged to dress in warm clothing for the tour.
Journey to Bethlehem is free and open to the public.
