PITTSBURG — Volunteering is a large part of Becky May’s life, and for her generosity and her service at Pittsburg State University she has been honored as one of the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Women of Distinction.

May works as the executive director of Pittsburg State University Office of University Development where she oversees fundraising and makes sure donor’s wishes are carried out.
As the director, she also organizes stewardship and donor recognition events, served on the university scholarship committee, managed the development of PSU Foundation scholarships and assisted various university offices in working with donors, all of which has been made possible through the hard work and energy of her staff, she said.

“Our staff is really awesome,” May said. “They get out there and work with folks … they keep me going and give me energy.”

May has been leading her staff members through the university’s capital campaign “Proven, Promise Pitt State,” which encourages ongoing support by developing partnerships with alumni and constituents.

May said it is very touching to her when the donors meet the recipients, an experience which might be be remembered by students and and may inspire them to do the same in the future.

“I love knowing what I do affects people,” she said.

Along with her fundraising efforts at PSU, May spends time volunteering with the Pittsburg Rotary Club, Girl Scouts and the Pittsburg Family YMCA.

“It is not question of if you are going to to volunteer, it’s a question of where,” she said.
