PITTSBURG — The Southeast Kansas Humane Society is gearing up for a Super Bowl Sunday tradition.
Each year, the SEK Humane Society hosts a chili dinner on Super Bowl Sunday as a fundraiser for its shelter. The 41st annual dinner will take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, February 4 in the lower level of Memorial Auditorium.
In conjunction with the dinner, the SEK Humane Society will also have a country store with items from the public and The Doggie Bag in Pittsburg. Any members of the public who would like to donate items to the country store or desserts can bring them to Memorial Auditorium February 3 or 4 from 9 to 11 a.m.
“We will have kind of a Doggie Bag corner display with unique items from the story,” SEK Humane Society Board President Mary Kay Caldwell said. “People are also welcome to bring any crafts, desserts, or other items they would like to donate.”
Meal tickets for the event can be purchased at The Doggie Bag at 816 N. Broadway in Pittsburg. Tickets are $7 each and are good for dine-in and carry-out meals. To-go quarts will be available for $10 cash. Each ticket is good for chili, dessert and a drink.
All proceeds will go to maintenance and animal care at the SEK Humane Society Shelter.
“With this cold weather, our fuel bill out there has been huge,” Caldwell said. “So we can really use the help from this event.”
For the past few years, the humane society has partnered with Pittsburg Animal Control for the event, which Caldwell said helps more animals, and offsets the cost of Memorial Auditorium.
Even though the main function of the event is a fundraiser, Caldwell said the long-standing dinner feels like more.
“We’ve done this for so many years it’s kind of become a reunion for the animal lovers,” she said.
Volunteers are also needed to help with the event. Those interested may call Dolores Kennett at 620-231-5059.
