PITTSBURG — A new reporter is joining the Morning Sun. Brandon Schmitz will work as a Staff Writer following Chance Hoener’s departure.

Schmitz was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and graduated from Union High School in 2011. He spent the first two years of his college career at Tulsa Community College before transferring to Oklahoma State University. In 2016, he earned a bachelor’s degree in multimedia journalism.

While attending OSU, he wrote weekly stories for the school’s newspaper, the O’Colly. His main focus was the entertainment scene, particularly movie reviews. Throughout the past year, he has written feature stories for TulsaKids Magazine.

“I’m excited to jump into the fast-paced routine of a daily newspaper,” Schmitz said. “Having the opportunity to write every day — it doesn’t get much better than that.”

Schmitz grew up with his three brothers in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where his father and mother work as a veterinarian and a legal secretary, respectively.

When he is not in the newsroom, Schmitz enjoys playing video games, watching movies with friends, and occasionally squeezing in time for the gym.

“We’re thrilled to have Brandon join us,” Managing Editor Patrick Richardson said. “In addition to his other duties Brandon is going to breathe life into our entertainment coverage, including a new entertainment page which will begin running in the next few weeks.”
